Importance of Home Insurance

I was only an insurance sales person for a local insurance agency when I discovered the value of having Home insurance.
While sitting on my desk, a customer walked in and asked me if I could help with a claim. She said that a disaster had happened at her house and it burned down to the ground. She mentioned that she was out of work and had 2 kids. She was worried about what she was going to do while her home was fixed.

I was glad to inform the customer that she had additional living expenses in her policy and it will cover for the rents that she could pay while living somewhere else. I went on to explain all the coverages to her and the reason why she needed no to worry. The customer was going to get an amount that, putting it together, she was never going to pay on insurance premiums during her whole life.

The Basic Home insurance in Texas:

Insuring your home is essential to protect your most valuable asset. A standard Texas homeowners policy includes dwelling coverage, other structures coverage, personal property coverage, loss of use coverage, personal liability coverage, and medical payments coverage. Understanding what each includes will help you choose appropriate limits.
Dwelling coverage pays to repair or rebuild your home up to the limit you choose, less any deductible. The dwelling limit should equal the full cost to reconstruct your home. Factors like square footage, materials, and labor influence reconstruction cost. Most policies also cover attached structures like garages, decks and porches under the dwelling limit.
Other structures coverage is for unattached structures on your property, like sheds, fences and standalone garages. Having adequate coverage prevents major out-of-pocket costs if they are damaged. Set this limit based on the value of all secondary structures.
Personal property coverage pays to replace belongings inside your home if they are stolen, damaged or destroyed. Your limit should equal the replacement cost of all possessions. Make an inventory to help set the limit and document valuables. Standard policies cover about 50% of the personal property limit for high-value categories like jewelry, art, furs and silverware. Additional riders can increase protection.
Loss of use coverage pays additional living expenses if your home is uninhabitable due to a covered loss. It covers hotel bills, restaurant meals, laundry, and other costs above your normal expenses while displaced. 20% of the dwelling limit is standard but you can increase for greater protection.
Liability coverage pays for bodily injury or property damage to others which you are legally responsible for. It protects you if someone is injured on your property. 100/300/100 ($100,000 per person, $300,000 per occurrence, $100,000 for property damage) is the minimum recommended liability limit. Higher limits ensure sufficient asset protection.
Medical payments coverage pays minor medical expenses for others injured on your property, regardless of fault. $1000 to $5000 is commonly recommended. This can prevent tapping into liability coverage for small medical bills.
